La Perouse Swimming Pool

A University of New South Wales Project

The La Perouse Swimming Pool project is all about the use of sustainably sourced Australian softwood and hardwood timber and designing with the natural environment. This project really challenged me as I experimented with more complex geometry and gradients on wild cliffs that I worked with rather than against.

Site plan

I wanted this project to be inspired by the rogue and wilderness of the site therefore I knew initially I wanted the structure to follow the flow.. I achieved this by following geometry of a circle for the grid creating beautiful curvatures in the plan. This inspired the shape of the columns which drove the design to where it is today.

As this is a construction studio project, more detail to structural capability of the locally sourced timber is prioritised. The circular geometry dictated where the bearers and pin joints were to go on the cliff face.
